The older brain consists of the brain stem, the limbic system, and the cerebellum.
Brain Stem
The brainstem connects to the spinal cord and begins to well after entering the skull. This swelling is called the medulla oblongata, which controls a person's breathing, heart functions, blood vessels, digestion, sneezing, and swallowing. Above the medulla is the pons. The pons assists with movement. At the tops of the brainstem is the midbrain. It helps with body movement, vision and hearing as well as sending messages from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord. This helps with voluntary movement.
